Using puller tool No. 09950-20017 or equivalent, disconnect driveshaft from steering knuckle. Before removing driveshaft, wrap vinyl tape
around threads of driveshaft to prevent damaging oil seal. Cover driveshaft boot with cloth to protect it from damage.

Push front axle carrier toward the outside of the vehicle and separate driveshaft from steering knuckle, Fig. 10.

Using hub wrench or equivalent, pry out left driveshaft. Ensure not to damage dust cover.

11.

Remove two attaching bolts and transmission case protector.

12.

Using a brass bar and hammer, drive out driveshaft.

Disassembly

    Check driveshaft to ensure there is no play in the inboard and outboard joint. Ensure inboard joint slides smoothly in the thrust direction and that there
is no play in the axial direction. Check for no damage to boots.

Remove six hexagon bolts and washers.

2.

Disconnect side gear shaft from driveshaft, then reinstall bolts and washer to keep the inboard joint together. Tighten bolts by hand to avoid
scratching flange surface.

3.

Remove four boot clamps from inboard and outboard joint.

4.

Disassemble inboard joint as follows:

a. Place alignment marks on the inboard joint and driveshaft. Do not use a punch to place alignment marks.
b. Remove snap ring.
c. Using tool 09726-0030 or equivalent, a socket wrench and a suitable press, remove inboard joint from driveshaft.
d. Remove attaching bolts, nuts and washers from inboard joint assembly.
e. Using a screwdriver and a hammer, remove inboard joint from inboard joint cover. When removing, hold onto the inner and outer race

assemblies.

f. Remove boots. Remove the boot from the inboard joint and outboard joint. Check inside and outside of the boots for damage.

5.

Using a screwdriver, pry out side gear shaft snap ring and replace.

6.

Remove dust cover from side gear shaft, then remove O-ring and replace.

7.

Using a suitable press, install new dust cover.

Assembly

1.

Temporarily install boots and new boot clamps. Before installing boot, wrap tape around the shaft splines to prevent damaging boot. The
boot and clamp of the outboard joint are smaller than those of the inboard joint.

2.

Temporarily install the two boots and four new clamps to the outboard joint and inboard joint.

3.

Install boot to outboard joint as follows:

a. Before assembling the boots, pack in suitable grease.
b. Install two boot clamps to outboard joint boot.
c. Bend back band and lock boot into place.

4.

Assemble new inboard joint cover as follows:

a. Apply seal packing to the inboard joint cover. Avoid applying excess amount to the surface area.
b. Align attaching bolt holes of cover with holes on the inboard joint, then insert hexagon bolts.
c. Using a suitable hammer, tap rim of the inboard joint cover into place. Tap on cover at equally spaced points, alternating taps as not to distort

cover.

d. Use bolts, nuts and washers to keep assembly together. Tighten attaching bolts by hand.

5.

Assembly inboard joint as follows:

a. Align marks placed during disassembly.
b. Using a brass bar and a suitable hammer, tap inboard joint onto the driveshaft. Ensure brass bar is touching the inner race and not the cage.
c. Install a new snap ring.
d. Pack .20 lbs., of grease into inboard tulip and boot assemble.
e. Ensure boot is on the shaft groove. Ensure the boot is not stretched or contracted when the driveshaft is at standard length. Driveshaft length

should be 15.96 inch.

f. Bend back band and lock boot into place.

6.

Install side gear shaft as follows:

a. Pack .9 lbs., of grease into side gear shaft.
b. Remove two washers and four bolts from driveshaft.
c. Align matchmarks, then install side gear shaft with a new gasket to driveshaft.
d. Tighten six hexagon bolts with washers.

7.

Check driveshaft to ensure there is no play in the inboard joint and outboard joint assemblies. Ensure the inboard joint slides smoothly in the thrust
direction.

Installation

1.

Install driveshaft as follows:

a. Temporarily install driveshaft with a plastic hammer, before installing the driveshaft, set snap ring with opening side facing downward. Ensure
