Valve Clearance: Service and Repair
INSPECTION
HINT: Inspect and adjust the valve clearance when the engine is cold.
1. Remove cylinder head cover.
a. Disconnect the 4 high-tension cords from the clamp on the cylinder head cover.
b. Disconnect the 4 high-tension cords from the spark plugs.
c. Disconnect these cables and hoses:
1) Accelerator cable from throttle body.
2) Accelerator cable from clamp on intake manifold.
3) A/T throttle control cable from throttle body.
4) Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose from air cleaner hose.
5) PCV hose from intake manifold.
d. Remove the 2 bolts, and disconnect the cable bracket from the intake manifold.
e. Disconnect the engine wire protector from the 2 mounting bolts of the No.2 timing belt cover in the sequence shown.
f.
Remove the oil filler cap.
g. Remove the cylinder head cover.
2. Set NO.1 cylinder to Top Dead Center (TDC)/Compression.
a. Turn the crankshaft pulley, and align its groove with timing mark "0" of the No.1 timing belt cover.
b. Check that the valve lifters on the No.1 cylinder are loose and valve lifters on the No.4 are tight.
If not, turn the crankshaft one revolution (360°) and align the mark as above.
3. Inspect valve clearance.
