Timing Belt: Service and Repair
Removal
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable. Drain coolant from radiator and engine block. On models with 3A-C engine, remove radiator.
2.
On vehicles equipped with power steering, remove fan shroud, if equipped, power steering pump mounting bolts and drive belt.
3.
On vehicles equipped with air conditioning, loosen idler pulley nut, adjusting bolt and remove drive belt.
4.
Remove air cleaner assembly.
5.
Remove water pump pulley and drive belt.
6.
Disconnect PCV hose from PCV valve.
7.
Remove bolts, cylinder head cover, gasket and plug.
8.
On vehicles equipped with power steering, remove No. 2 crankshaft pulley.

9.
Set No. 1 piston at TDC of compression stroke. Ensure rocker arms of No. 1 cylinder are loose. If not, turn crankshaft one full turn.
10.
Remove crankshaft pulley bolt and pulley.
11.
Remove timing belt cover bolts, timing belt covers and gasket. If timing belt is to be reused, draw arrow on belt to indicate direction of rotation
and make alignment marks between timing belt and camshaft sprocket and timing belt and camshaft sprocket.
12.
Remove timing belt guide, timing belt and idler pulley. Do not allow oil or water to contact timing belt, sprockets or idler pulley.
13.
Remove crankshaft and camshaft sprockets.
Installation
1.
Check timing belt for damage, replace if necessary.
2.
Align camshaft dowel pin with notch on camshaft timing sprocket.
3.
Install and torque camshaft timing sprocket bolt to 29-39 ft. lbs.

Align bearing cap mark with small hole on camshaft sprocket, Fig. 82.
