Steering Gear: Service and Repair

Removal/Installation

1.

Disconnect tie rod arms from steering knuckle using suitable puller.

2.

Remove front exhaust pipe if necessary, then, on models equipped with power steering, remove power steering lines from valve control housing.

3.

Remove column hole cover if necessary, Fig. 11, then make alignment marks between universal joint and control valve shaft and remove universal
joint retaining bolts and universal joint.

4.

On 4WD models, proceed as follows:
a. Place alignment marks between the propeller shaft flange and the intermediate flange, then remove propeller shaft retaining bolts, then the

propeller shaft. Insert tool 09325-20010 or suitable transmission oil plug.

b. Remove Nos. 1 and 2 engine undercover, Fig. 11, then the engine rear mount bracket.
c. Attach an engine hoist chain to the upper engine hangers to support engine before removing lower crossmember.
d. Remove lower crossmember with lower arm, then front stabilizer, then center crossmember.
e. Raise front of engine with suitable jack. Do not overtilt engine.

5.

On 2WD models, remove center engine mounting member, then rear engine mounting bracket if necessary.

6.

On all models, remove steering gear housing retaining brackets, bolts, nuts and grommets, then the steering gear housing from vehicle.

7.

Reverse procedure to install.
