Disassembly and Assembly

Service

DISASSEMBLY

1.

Mount steering gear assembly onto work stand.

2.

Remove solenoid valve, if equipped, and pitman arm, then the adjusting screw locknut and washer.

3.

Remove end cover mounting bolts, then rotate adjusting screw clockwise until cover is removed.

4.

Tap on pitman arm end of cross shaft and remove cross shaft from housing.

5.

Remove valve body retaining bolts, then rotate worm shaft clockwise while holding power piston until valve body O-ring separates from housing.
Remove valve body and power piston assembly.

INSPECTION & ASSEMBLY

1.

Check cross shaft endplay by mounting cross shaft in vise and checking endplay using dial indicator. Endplay should be .0012-.0020 inch (.03-.05
mm). To adjust, loosen locknut, then turn adjusting screw until proper endplay is obtained.

2.

To replace needle roller bearings, remove oil seal from pitman arm end of housing, then remove snap ring. Remove metal spacer, Teflon seal and
O-ring. Press out bearing using suitable tool. When installing new bearing, drive in until bearing is flush with inside casting surface. Install
bearings with long flange facing out. Install O-ring, spacer, snap ring and seal.

Install new O-rings onto valve body, then assemble valve body onto housing. Torque bolts alternately and evenly to 29-39 ft. lbs. (4-5.5 kg-m).

To replace worm shaft bearing, remove locknut, then remove bearing cap. Remove worm bearing and O-ring. Inspect bearing for damage and
replace if necessary.

5.

Tighten worm bearing cap until specified preload is obtained. Preload should be 3.5-5.6 inch lbs. (4-6.5 kg-cm). Torque locknut to 33-39 ft. lbs.
(4.5-5.5 kg-m) while holding bearing cap.

6.

Install new O-ring onto end cover, then assemble cross shaft to end cover. Loosen adjusting screw, then set worm gear at center position of gear
housing.

7.

Install cross shaft into gear housing so that center teeth mesh, then torque end cover bolts to 29-39 ft. lbs. (4-5.5 kg-m).

8.

Rotate worm shaft to full lock position in both directions to determine exact center point. Rotate adjusting screw and adjust total preload to 5.2-8.2
inch lbs.

9.

Install new adjusting screw washer, then torque locknut to 29-39 ft. lbs. while holding adjusting screw.

10.

Stake locknut at three places.
