Valve Clearance: Adjustments
1ZZ-FE ENGINE MECHANICAL: VALVE CLEARANCE:
ADJUSTMENT
1. DISCONNECT BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL
2. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER RH
3. REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD COVER NO.2
(a) Remove the cylinder head cover No. 2 (See: Timing Components/Timing Chain/Service and Repair/Removal).
4. REMOVE IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the ignition coil assembly (See: Timing Components/Timing Chain/Service and Repair/Removal).
5. REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the cylinder head cover sub-assembly (See: Timing Components/Timing Chain/Service and Repair/Removal).
6. SET NO. 1 CYLINDER TO TDC / COMPRESSION
(a) Set the No. 1 cylinder to the TDC/compression (See: Timing Components/Timing Chain/Service and Repair/Removal).
7. CHECK VALVE CLEARANCE
(a) Check only the valves indicated.
(1) Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the valve lifter and camshaft.
Valve clearance (Cold):
Intake
0.15 to 0.25 mm (0.0059 to 0.0098 in.)
Exhaust
0.25 to 0.35 mm (0.0098 to 0.0138 in.)
(2) Record any out-of-specification valve clearance measurements. They will be used later to determine the required replacement valve lifters.
(b) Turn the crankshaft 1 revolution (360°) to set the No. 4 cylinder to the TDC/compression.
(c) Check only the valves indicated.
8. ADJUST VALVE CLEARANCE
(a) Remove the No. 2 camshaft (See: Camshaft, Lifters and Push Rods/Camshaft/Service and Repair/Removal).
(b) Remove the camshaft (See: Camshaft, Lifters and Push Rods/Camshaft/Service and Repair/Removal).
(c) Remove the valve lifters.
(d) Using a micrometer, measure the thickness of the removed valve lifters.
(e) Calculate the thickness of a new lifter so that the valve clearance comes within the specified values.
