Steering Gear: Service and Repair
Removal and Installation

1.

Raise and support vehicle.

2.

Scribe alignment marks on mainshaft, joint yoke and pinion shaft.

3.

Remove two universal joint attaching bolts, then pull universal joint first from gear housing, then from mainshaft.

4.

Remove front wheel and tire assemblies.

5.

Remove cotter pins and nuts securing knuckle arm to tie rod.

6.

Using tool 09528-62011 or equivalent, disconnect knuckle arm from tie rod end.

7.

Remove center floor crossmember.

8.

Remove gear housing bracket set bolts and the gear housing assembly.

9.

Reverse procedure to install. Torque gear housing assembly attaching bolts to 32 ft. lbs., the crossmember attaching bolts to 19 ft. lbs., the tie rod
to knuckle arm attaching nuts to 36 ft. lbs., the universal joint attaching bolts to 26 ft. lbs. and the tie rod end locknuts to 35 ft. lbs.
