Pulsed Secondary Air Injection: Testing and Inspection

1981-82 3A-C Engine

1.  Check hoses and tubes for kinks, cracks, damage, or loose connections and repair or replace as necessary.

2.  Disconnect vacuum hose from air suction valve "B" and plug end of hose. 

3. Start engine and run at idle. A bubbling noise should he heard at air cleaner when air cleaner cap is removed.

4.  Reinstall air cleaner cap.

5.  Reconnect vacuum hose to air suction valve "B". A bubbling noise should he heard from air suction valve inlet within 2 to 5 seconds after

reconnecting hose.

6.  If test results are not as desired, test air suction valves independently.

1981-82 Pickup Except California 

1.  Check hoses and tubes for kinks, cracks, damage, or loose connections and repair or replace as necessary. 

2.  Disconnect air suction hose from air cleaner.

3.  With coolant temperature below 43° F, check that bubbling noise is not heard from air suction hose at idle.

4.  Warm up engine until it reaches operating temperature and check that bubbling noise is heard at air suction hose at idle.

5.  Disconnect vacuum hose between check valve and vacuum pipe bracket at check valve side and plug end of hose.

6.  Check that a bubbling noise is still heard from air suction hose at idle.

7.  Race engine and quickly close throttle valve. Check that bubbling noise stops momentarily.

8.  With engine idling, short terminals of thermo sensor. Check that bubbling noise stops.

9.  Disconnect short.

10.  If test results are not as described, test components individually. To test components other than air suction valve, refer to evaporative emission

system or air injection system.

1981-82 4K-C Engine

1.  Check hoses and tubes for kinks, cracks, damage, or loose connections and repair or replace as necessary.

2.  Disconnect air suction hose from air suction valve.

3.  With engine idling, check that bubbling noise is heard from air suction hose.

4.  Reconnect air suction hose to air suction valve.

5.  Remove air filter from air cleaner, check and clean filter, and reinstall filter.
