Backing Plate Removal (Part 2 Of 2). Pickup & 4Runner

1.

Raise and support vehicle.

2.

Remove rear wheel and brake drum.

4.

Disconnect parking brake cable and using line wrench 09751-36011, or equivalent, remove brake line.

5.

Remove four backing plate mounting bolts and pull out axle.

6.

Remove snap ring from axle shaft.

7.

Install special tool 09521-25011, or equivalent and press axle from backing plate, Fig. 1.

8.

Pry out outer seal using screwdriver.

9.

Using bearing removers 09223-56010 and 09608-35014 or equivalents, press bearing from backing plate.

10.

Grind down bearing inner retainer, then cut it off using a hammer and chisel.

11.

Reverse procedure to install.
