Auxiliary Air Valve (Idle Speed): Testing and Inspection

1.

Ensure that engine coolant temperature is less than 140°F.

2.

Connect suitable tachometer as described in ``Tune Up,'' then start engine.

3.

Note engine RPM, then pinch off air hose to valve. RPM should drop.

4.

Release air valve hose, then run engine until it reaches normal operating temperature.

5.

Note engine RPM, then pinch off air hose to valve. Engine speed should drop less than 50 RPM. (100 RPM on 2S-E).

6.

Stop engine and disconnect electrical connector to air valve.

7.

Measure resistance between air valve terminals. With coolant temperature above 176°F, resistance should be 40-60 ohms.

8.

If air valve fails to perform as outlined, valve is defective.
