Axle Bearing: Service and Repair
The following procedures apply to rear wheel drive and four wheel drive models, except 1988 Camry and Celica models equipped with the
All Wheel Drive system. For axle bearing replacement procedures on front wheel drive models, refer to ``Rear Hub & Wheel Bearing,
Replace.'' For 1988 Camry & Celica models equipped with the all wheel drive system, refer to ``All Wheel Drive'' for service procedures not
found in this section.
1.
Raise and support vehicle, then drain rear axle fluid.
2.
On two wheel drive models, remove parking brake retaining clip and clamp bolt from frame.
3.
On two wheel drive models, disconnect parking brake rear cable from equalizer.
4.
On four wheel drive models remove pin, then disconnect parking brake cable from bell crank.
5.
Remove brake drum, then disconnect brake hydraulic line from wheel cylinder.
6.
Remove four bolts securing backing plate to axle housing, then remove axle shaft. Use caution not to damage oil seal when removing shaft.
7.
Remove snap ring, then press rear axle shaft from backing plate using tool SST 09521-25011 or equivalent.
8.
To replace bearing, remove oil seal, then press bearing from flange case using tools 09608-30011 and 09228-44010 or equivalents.
9.
Install new bearing using tools 09608-35012 and 09515-30010 or equivalents, then install new oil seal.
10.
Coat oil seal with suitable grease, then press axle shaft onto backing plate using tool 09515-30010 or equivalent. Install snap ring.
11.
Reverse steps 1 through 6 to complete installation.
