Turbocharger: Service and Repair
On-Vehicle Inspection

    Prior to checking turbocharger operating pressure and actuator operation, ensure turbocharger air intake system and exhaust system are
not restricted and are not leaking. Check hoses and lines for fatigue. Carefully check for collapsed hoses or for deformations. Check all
turbocharger components for heat fatigue. This condition can be detected by blackish/bluish discolorations (hot spots) accompanied by small
cracks on the turbocharger housings. If this condition is indicated, do not operate vehicle until conditions have been corrected.

EXCEPT 1988 3S-GTE & 7M-GTE ENGINES

1.

Inspect the intake air system for a clogged air cleaner, collapsed or deformed hoses, leakage from connections and cracks in components.

Check exhaust system for leakage or clogging between the cylinder head and turbocharger inlet, then between the turbocharger outlet and exhaust
pipe.

Inspect the actuator and waste gate valve for proper operation as follows:

a. Disconnect actuator hose.
b. Using a pressure gauge, SST 09992-00240, 241 or equivalent, apply approximately 8.2 psi on diesel applications, or 7.7 psi on 7M-GTE

engines to the actuator and ensure actuator rod moves freely. Do not apply more than 10 psi on all except 7M-GTE engines, or 11.4 psi
on 7M-GTE engines to the actuator.

c. If actuator rod does not move, replace turbocharger assembly.

Check turbocharger pressure by installing pressure gauge SST 09992-00240, 241 or equivalent. Drive vehicle with engine running at 2400 RPM
or more with throttle valve fully opened on all except 7M-GTE engine. On 7M-GTE engine, drive vehicle with engine running at 2800 RPM or
more with throttle valve fully opened. Turbocharger pressure should be 7.1 psi for 22R-TE engines and 7.7 psi for 2L-T and 7M-GTE engines.

If pressure is less than that specified, check the intake and exhaust systems for leakage. If no leakage is found, replace turbocharger assembly. If
pressure is above specifications, check if actuator hose is disconnected or damaged. If not, replace turbocharger assembly.

6.

Check impeller wheel rotation as follows:

a. Disconnect air cleaner hose.
b. Turn the impeller wheel and check that it turns smoothly.
c. If impeller wheel does not turn or turns with drag, replace turbocharger assembly.
