Removal

2AR-FE ENGINE MECHANICAL: CYLINDER HEAD GASKET: REMOVAL

REMOVAL

1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL

CAUTION:  Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system.

2. REMOVE ENGINE AND TRANSAXLE

(a) Remove the engine and transaxle See: Service and Repair/Removal and Replacement/Engine Assembly/Removal.

3. REMOVE EXHAUST MANIFOLD CONVERTER SUB-ASSEMBLY

(a) Remove the exhaust manifold converter See: Exhaust System/Exhaust Manifold/Service and Repair/Removal.

4. REMOVE THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY See: Powertrain Management/Fuel Delivery and Air Induction/Throttle Body/Service and

Repair/Removal

5. DISCONNECT WIRE HARNESS See: Intake Manifold/Service and Repair/Removal
6. REMOVE VACUUM SWITCHING VALVE ASSEMBLY (for ACIS) See: Intake Manifold/Service and Repair/Removal
7. REMOVE FUEL DELIVERY PIPE SUB-ASSEMBLY See: Powertrain Management/Fuel Delivery and Air Induction/Fuel Injector/Service and

Repair/Removal

8. DISCONNECT NO. 2 VENTILATION HOSE See: Intake Manifold/Service and Repair/Removal
9. REMOVE INTAKE MANIFOLD See: Intake Manifold/Service and Repair/Removal

10. REMOVE CAMSHAFT

(a) Remove the camshafts See: Camshaft, Lifters and Push Rods/Camshaft/Service and Repair/Removal.

11. REMOVE VALVE STEM CAP

(a) Remove the 16 valve stem caps from the cylinder head.

HINT:  Arrange the removed parts in the correct order.

12. REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD SUB-ASSEMBLY

(a) Using a 10 mm bi-hexagon wrench, uniformly loosen the 10 bolts in the sequence shown in the illustration. Remove the 10 cylinder head bolts

and plate washers.
HINT:  Be sure to keep the removed parts separate for each installation position.
NOTICE:
-

Be careful not to drop washers into the cylinder head.

-

Head warpage or cracking could result from removing bolts in an incorrect order.

(b) Remove the cylinder head.

13. REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD GASKET

(a) Remove the cylinder head gasket from the cylinder block.
