Steering Gear: Service and Repair
Removal and Installation
1.
Ensure steering wheel in center and locked into place. Raise and support front of vehicle, then position front wheels straight ahead.
2.
Remove engine undercover.
3.
Remove steering shaft universal joint bolt on pinion shaft side, then loosen universal joint bolt on main shaft side. Make alignment marks between
pinion shaft and universal joint, then pull out universal joint from pinion shaft.
4.
Remove power steering pressure and return lines from gear housing.
5.
Remove cotter pins and nuts from tie rod ends, then using suitable puller, separate tie rod ends from steering knuckles.
6.
Disconnect pressure feed and return tubes.
7.
On turbo models, remove air intake connector and air hose.
8.
On all models, remove steering damper attaching bolts, then the damper.
9.
Remove power steering hose clamp bolts, then the gear housing bracket attaching bolts.
10.
Remove steering gear housing from vehicle.
11.
Reverse procedure to install. Tighten attaching nuts and bolts to specifications.
