Valve Guide: Service and Repair

Valve stem to guide oil clearance should not exceed 0.0031 inch for intake valves and 0.0039 inch for exhaust. If valve replacement will not bring
clearance within standards, guide replacement will be necessary.

1.

Using a suitable method, gradually heat cylinder head to 176-212° F.

Using valve guide driver tool No. 09201-10000, or equivalent, tap out guide from cylinder side.

Using a suitable measuring tool measure bore in cylinder head and select correct guide. Bore measurements between .4331 to .4341 inch. Use a
standard guide. Measurements above .4341 require valve guide hole to be rebored to .4350 to .4361 inch and use of an oversize guide.

Heat cylinder head as outlined in step 1. Install new valve guide using tool as above and driving in from camshaft side leaving a protrusion of
.0323 to .339 inch, Fig. 20.

5.

Using a sharp .234 inch reamer, ream new valve guide if necessary. Refer to Valve Guides & Valve Seats for stem clearances.
