Valve Guide: Service and Repair
Valve stem to guide oil clearance should not exceed .0031 inch for intake valves and .0039 inch for exhaust. If valve replacement will not bring
clearance within standards, guide replacement will be necessary.
1.
Using a suitable tool, Fig. 6, and hammer, strike valve guide to break it off at cylinder head casting.
Fig. 6 Breaking Valve Guide.
2.
Using a suitable method, gradually heat cylinder head to 176-212°F.
3.
Using valve guide driver tool No. 09201-60011, or equivalent, tap out guide from camshaft side.
4.
Using a suitable measuring tool, measure bore in cylinder head and select correct guide. Bore measurements between .5118 to .5129 inch and use
a standard guide. Measurements above .5129 inch require valve guide hole to be rebored to .5138 to .5148 inch. Use of an oversize guide. Install
snap ring on new valve guide. Heat cylinder head as outlined in step 2. Install new valve guide.
5.
Using a sharp .310 inch reamer, ream new valve guide if necessary. Refer to Cylinder Head, Valve Guides & Valve Seats for stem clearances.
