Governor: Service and Repair

Except Pickup

1. Raise and support vehicle and remove driveshaft.
2. Using a suitable jack, raise transmission just enough to take weight off rear mount.
3. Disconnect speedometer cable and remove cable drive gear assembly.
4. Disconnect ground strap and rubber exhaust hanger from crossmember and remove crossmember.
5. Remove extension housing retaining bolts, extension housing and seal.
6. Remove outer snap ring and speedometer drive gear from output shaft.
7. Remove lock ball and inner snap ring, if equipped.
8. Remove governor lock bolt, pry up retaining clip with a suitable lever and slide governor off output shaft.
9. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:

a. Ensure retaining clip is seated in shaft, torque governor lock bolt to 27-43 inch lbs., then stake lock plate.
b. Renew extension housing and speedometer gear seals as needed.
c. Torque extension housing bolts to 25 ft. lbs.
d. Fill transmission fluid to specified level then road test vehicle.

Pickup

1. Raise and support vehicle and remove driveshaft.
2. Disconnect speedometer cable and remove cable drive gear assembly.
3. Remove bolts securing rear mount to bracket, then raise transmission using a suitable jack.
4. Remove rear mount from extension housing.
5. Remove extension housing retaining bolts, housing and gasket, noting position of bolts for assembly reference.
6. Remove and replace governor from output shaft as outlined for passenger cars.
7. Reverse procedure to complete installation.
