Suspension Spring ( Coil / Leaf ): Service and Repair
Front
1.
Raise and support vehicle.
2.
On 1987-88 sedan models, remove brake hose clip from strut and disconnect brake hose from caliper, then pull brake hose from strut and allow to
drain into suitable container.
3.
On all except 1987-88 Tercel wagon, scribe alignment marks on strut lower bracket and the camber adjusting cam.
4.
On all models, remove two bolts and nuts and disconnect steering knuckle.
5.
Remove dust cover from suspension support, then loosen but do not remove nut.
6.
Remove three nuts attaching strut to body, then remove strut from body. Cover driveshaft boot with cloth to avoid damage.
7.
Install bolt and nuts on bracket at lower portion of strut shell and secure assembly in suitable vise.
8.
Using suitable tool, compress coil spring.
9.
Prevent suspension from turning with screwdriver and remove support nut.
10.
Remove suspension support, spring seat, spring and dust cover.
11.
Reverse procedure to install. Torque three strut upper attaching nuts to 17 ft. lbs. on 1982-86 models, or 23 ft. lbs. on except 1982-86; the lower
strut attaching bolts to 105 ft. lbs. on 1982-86 and 1987-88 wagon models, or 166 ft. lbs. on 1987-88 sedan models and the suspension support nut
to 36 ft. lbs.
