Ball Joint: Testing and Inspection

1.

Raise front of vehicle and place a 7-8 inch block under one tire.

2.

Lower vehicle until the front springs are about half loaded. Place stands under vehicle.

3.

Chock front wheels after ensuring they are in straight forward position.

4.

Using suitable lever, move lower control arm up and down to check that ball joint does not have excessive play. Maximum play should be as
follows: Cressida, 1984-85 Celica, 1984-Early 1986 Supra, Corolla RWD, .098 inch (2.5 mm); Corolla FWD, Camry, Starlet, Tercel, 1986-88
Celica & Late 1986-88 Supra, 0 inch.

5.

Repeat procedure for opposite ball joint.
