1.
Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
2.
Remove grease cap, cotter pin, nut lock and adjusting nut, Fig. 5.
3.
Remove brake drum/hub assembly with outer bearing and thrust washer from axle shaft.
4.
Using a suitable screwdriver, pry oil seal from hub, then remove inner bearing.
5.
Inspect inner and outer bearings and races for wear and damage. If necessary, replace race(s) with suitable removal and installation tools.
6.
Clean and repack bearings and fill inside of axle hub and grease cap with multipurpose grease.
7.
Install inner bearing in axle hub, then install new oil seal using suitable seal installer. Grease oil seal lips with multipurpose grease.
8.
Install brake drum/hub assembly on axle shaft, then install outer bearing in hub. Apply multi-purpose grease between outer bearing and thrust
washer surface, then install thrust washer.
9.
Install adjusting nut and torque to 22 ft. lbs., then rotate brake drum/hub assembly to seat bearings. Loosen adjusting nut until hand tight. Ensure
brakes are not dragging.
10.
Attach suitable spring scale to wheel stud and measure oil seal rotation frictional force. Oil seal frictional force should be approximately .9 lb.
11.
With spring scale still attached, tighten adjusting nut until bearing preload is .9-2.2 lbs. above the oil seal frictional force determined in step 10.
12.
Install locknut, cotter pin and grease cap. If cotter pin will not line up with axle shaft hole, tighten adjusting nut as small an amount as
possible to align.
13.
Adjust rear brakes as necessary.
