Camshaft: Service and Repair

1.

Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove radiator.

2.

Remove accessory drive belts and water pump pulley.

3.

Remove distributor and cold start injector.

4.

Remove rocker arm shaft assembly and pushrods, Fig. 1.

5.

Remove valve lifters. Label them so they can be reinstalled in original position.

6.

Remove crankshaft pulley retaining bolt, then using suitable puller, the crankshaft pulley.

7.

Remove timing chain cover bolts, then the timing chain cover.

8.

Using a suitable gauge, measure timing chain tension. Timing chain tension should be .531 inch at 22 lb. applied tension. If gauge reading exceeds
specified amount, replace timing chain and sprockets.

9.

Remove timing chain tensioner attaching bolts, then the tensioner.

10.

Remove camshaft sprocket retaining bolt.

11.

Pull both camshaft and crankshaft sprockets and timing chain from engine as an assembly.

12.

Using a suitable tool, remove timing chain vibration damper.

13.

Remove thrust plate, then camshaft from engine. When removing camshaft, great care must be taken to avoid nicking camshaft bearings
with camshaft. Installing a bolt in camshaft flange makes camshaft easier to handle.

14.

Install camshaft and thrust plate. Torque thrust plate attaching screw to specification.

15.

Install timing chain vibration damper. Torque attaching bolts specification.
