Valve Clearance: Adjustments
EXC. 4A-GE, 4A-GEC, 4A-GEL, 4A-GELC & 4A-GZE ENGINES
On 2S-E, 3Y-EC and 4Y-EC engines, valve clearance is maintained at zero lash by hydraulic adjusters that can not be adjusted. Valve clearance on 4K-E
engines is also maintained at zero lash with hydraulic adjusters, but these engines do have a provision for adjustment.
Valve lash on all engines should be adjusted with engine at normal operating temperature using procedure outlined below. On all except 4K-E engines,
adjust clearance for intake valves to 0.008 inch, and adjust clearance for exhaust valves to 0.012 inch (except 3T-C) or 0.013 inch (3T-C). On 4K-E
engines, adjust valves for zero lash, then tighten adjusters one additional turn to preload hydraulic lifters.
1.
Rotate crankshaft until No. 1 piston is at TDC on compression stroke, then adjust the following valves to specifications:
a. Cylinder No. 1 intake & exhaust.
b. Cylinder No. 2 intake.
c. Cylinder No. 3 exhaust.
2.
Rotate crankshaft 360° until No. 1 piston is at TDC on exhaust stroke, then adjust following valves to specifications:
a. Cylinder No. 2 exhaust.
b. Cylinder No. 3 intake.
c. Cylinder No. 4 intake & exhaust.
