Selector Lever Pawl

All automatic transmissions in the Astra-G are equipped with a selector lever pawl (III).

In order to prevent the vehicle setting off accidentally, the selector lever can only be moved out of the "P" position when the ignition is ON (I) and the brake pedal (II) is actuated at the same time.

In addition, the ignition lock is equipped with a catch that only allows the ignition key to be removed when the selector lever is in the "P" position.

• Service

The selector lever pawl operates electro-mechanically. If the vehicle electrical system malfunctions or there is an electrical defect, the pawl may have to be released manually (e.g. for towing the vehicle).

A detailed description of the release procedure is contained in the "Astra-G Owner's Manual" and the "Astra-G Service Instructions, group K".

Notice:

If the selector lever is not in the "P" position when the vehicle is stationary for an extended period of time (e.g. overnight), the battery may become discharged. In order to prevent this, always remove the ignition key from the ignition lock if the vehicle is to be left for an extended period of time, such as overnight.
