In the "standby" mode, the power consumption is approx. 4 amps, the electric motor runs at approx. 2200 rpm. The valve to the steering gear is open, and no assistance is provided for the steering.

In the "operational" mode, the maximum power consumption can rise briefly to 75 amps, and the rotational speed is increased to approx. 3200 rpm. The hydraulic power assistance is controlled via the torsion bar and the valves in the steering gear as in conventional power steering systems.

Protective Functions (EHPS)

The EHPS system is equipped with electronic protective functions to prevent the system being incapacitated by overheating. The protective functions exclude the possibility of system-specific malfunctions that would influence driving safety. The system also features integrated overvoltage, undervoltage and reverse battery protection.

The system management continually performs a plausibility check of all registered system parameters. If a fault is recognised, the system automatically returns to normal operation. If the steering assistance does fail, however, the steering system remains operational, although it then requires higher manual input.
