Adjustment instructions Astra-H, Zafira-B
Preparation of the vehicle
Before the chassis alignment, the following conditions must be
met on the vehicle:
- Use of prescribed wheel and tyre sizes
- Check for perfect tyre profile. The wear picture must be
even.
- Set tyre pressures for full load. The tyre pressures must be
equal on the left and right for each axle. The tyre pressure data
is given in the corresponding "Service Booklet" and "Service
Plan".
- All wheels and wheel bearings must be in perfect
condition.
- There must be no apparent damage to the chassis, no play in the
ball joints (tie-rod and steering joints) or suspension
components.
Check camber, castor and toe
The following points must be performed before chassis
alignment:
- Fill fuel tank to half full.
- Ensure that the vehicle is not loaded.
- Park the vehicle in the set-up position. For all chassis
alignments including toe, the vehicle must stand on a level
surface. The vehicle must be at the same height front and
rear.
- Load the front seats as specified in the brochure "Suspension
settings"
- Install and adjust chassis alignment equipment on the vehicle
in accordance with the manufacturer's regulations.
- Move the steering to the straight-ahead position.
Using the electronic chassis alignment machine, establish the
"actual values". For "nominal values", see brochure "Suspension
settings". The notes, recommendations and instructions from the
machine manufacturer must be followed.
Compile measurement report.
Front wheel position, check/adjust
Adjust camber
Note: Because of the
use of true fit bolt connections (1), the camber cannot be
adjusted.

|
Front toe, adjust
Important: An
adjustment should always be performed on both tie-rods. After the
adjustment, the two tie-rods may have a length difference of
maximum 5 mm.
Adjustment
Move steering to straight-ahead position. Release locknut (1) on
left and right tie-rods - hold with an open-ended wrench on the
tie-rod. Adjust toe by turning the tie-rods (2) - for "nominal
value" see brochure "Suspension settings".
Note: Due to the
nominal values, there is both a toe-in (+ toe) and a toe-out (-
toe) in the tolerance range. The tie-rods must adjusted so that
both front wheels have the same positive or negative value.
|
|
Tighten locknuts on both tie-rods - tightening torque 60 Nm . Hold with an open-ended wrench on
the tie-rod - ensuring that the gaiter on the steering gear has not
twisted. If necessary release clamp band, eliminate twist and refit
clamp band.
Check/visual inspection
Re-check toe adjustment. The steering wheel must be in the
centre position - identifiable from test drive.
Check/set straight-ahead position
Warning: After
working on the steering gear, in any case check the straight-ahead
position of the steering. The straight-ahead position is achieved
when the gaiters sit stress-free over the length (1) between the
grooves on the tie-rod and the steering housing and the wheels are
in the straight-ahead position.
Check/visual inspection
The steering gear spindle may be inserted in the intermediate
spindle twisted through 360°. This is evident if the gaiters
are stretched or squashed with the steering wheel in the
straight-ahead position and the wheels are not in the
straight-ahead position.
|
|
Adjustment
Turn steering wheel to straight-ahead position, remove ignition
key and allow steering lock to engage.
Remove intermediate spindle from steering gear spindle - see
Work Process "Remove and refit intermediate spindle" in group "M"
of the Service Instruction. Turn steering spindle until the gaiters
are the same length on both sides and the wheels are in the
straight-ahead position.
Install intermediate spindle on the steering mechanism.
Slight differences between the straight-ahead position of the
steering wheel and that of the wheels may be corrected by adjusting
the toe (changing the length of the tie-rods).
