Differential, Dismantle and Assemble (AF17)
Remove
2. |
Release 2x tapered roller bearing inner race (3) with KM-161-B (1), KM-161-3 and KM-161-4 (2)
from differential
Note: If necessary
detach removal hooks from counter-support and place on the bearing
individually.
|
3. |
Detach speedometer wheel (driving) (if still present)
Note: The tachometer
wheel is destroyed during detachment and is not replaced
subsequently.
|
4. |
Detach ring gear (4) from differential
• |
Mark position of ring gear in respect of differential
(arrow)
|
• |
Unscrew 8x bolt
– |
Open 4x retaining plate (5) with screwdriver
|
|
• |
Remove ring gear from differential
Note: Use a plastic
hammer if necessary.
|
|
|
|
|
5. |
Remove 2x axle shaft seal ring from transmission or converter
housing
• |
Remove axle shaft seal ring from inside with a screwdriver
|
|
6. |

Note: Ensure that the
transmission housing is laid flat under the press.
• |
Press tapered roller bearing outer race out with KM-697 (5)
|
• |
Remove friction washer (6)
Note: Arranged behind
tapered roller bearing outer ring.

|
|
Install
|
Important: Do not confuse spacer
(transmission housing side) and friction washer (converter housing
side). If using new bearings, always use the thinnest spacer from
"Service" department.
|
8. |
Install tapered roller bearing outer race in transmission
housing
• |
Insert spacer washer (optional)
|
• |
Press in tapered roller bearing outer race with KM-372-2 (1)
– |
use KM-554 (3) with KM-710 (2) as counterhold

Important: Do not confuse spacer
(transmission housing side) and friction washer (converter housing
side). If using new bearings, always use the thinnest spacer from
"Service" department.
|
9. |
Install tapered roller bearing outer race in converter
housing
Note: Ensure that the
converter housing is laid flat under the press.
• |
Press in tapered roller bearing outer race with KM-523-4 (6), KM-514 (5)

|
|
10. |
Attach ring gear, driven, (8) to differential housing
Note: Note markings
applied (9) during removal.
• |
Heat ring gear in oil on a hotplate to approx. 100 °C
|
• |
Tighten 8x bolt 100 Nm
Note: Use new
bolts.
– |
Attach 4x retaining plate (7)
Note: Use new retaining
plates.
|
|
|
|
Important: The tapered roller
bearing inner races have different thicknesses. The thinner bearing
is to be fitted on the differential housing side, the thicker
bearing on the drive wheel side.
|
11. |
Attach 2x tapered roller bearing inner race on the
differential
• |
Press on tapered roller bearing inner race with KM-514 (2) and KM-567-2
(1)
|
|
|
|
12. |
Adjust tapered roller bearing
• |
Insert differential into transmission housing.
|
|
13. |
Measure breakaway torque of differential
Note: Measure breakaway
torque without gear set with KM-6037 (1)
and MKM-536-A (2).
Measured value:
|
New bearing
|
( 0.8...1.4 Nm )
|
|
Run-in bearing
|
( 0.4...0.7 Nm )
|
Note: Adjust breakaway
torque by installing suitable spacer washers from the "Service"
Department. The spacer washer is installed under the tapered roller
bearing outer race in the transmission housing. To do this, remove
converter housing, differential and tapered roller bearing again
(only if adjustment is necessary).
