Electronic System Specific Information

  • Trouble Code Features
In a few cases, the diagnostic tester may display a trouble code status or description that looks unfamiliar:

    Trouble Code Status:
Instead of the known PRESENT, NOT PRESENT (and INTERMITTENT) message, you may read UNKNOWN DTC in the tester display. This tells you that the diagnostic software or control unit contains a piece of incorrect information that is unknown to the diagnostic tester and that it is unable to read or evaluate. Both the trouble code number and the trouble code text are not changed in this case.

The above mentioned special cases can not be removed by means of a diagnostic tester function.
  • Mechanical and/or Hydraulic Check
Before repairing the automatic transmission, always run a test using the diagnostic tester in conformity with the requisite Checking Procedures applicable for the relevant transmission.
The repair and overhauling procedures of the mechanical and hydraulic assembly groups of the automatic transmission are described in detail in the service instructions.
If remnants of clutch linings, metal shavings, contamination or deposits are detected during transmission repair work, the transmission must be completely disassembled and carefully cleaned with cleaning fluid. All parts and fluid ducts must be blown out and dried with compressed air.
  • Measured stall speed
Always test the stall speed in AT vehicles. During the test, high drive forces are kept under control exclusively by the vehicle's brake system. This test may not be performed for longer than a few seconds or otherwise the automatic transmission will overheat. Place brake wedges in front of and behind the drive wheels to secure the vehicle against rolling. Have a second person monitor the wheels and brake wedges during the test.
  • Park Brake Shift Lock
Now all models with automatic transmissions are additionally equipped with a park brake shift lock.
The park brake shift lock only allows the movement from selector lever position "P" if the ignition is switched ON and the brake pedal is actuated at the same time. This ensures that the vehicle does not drive off unintentionally.
  • Service
The park brake shift lock operates electro-mechanically. In case of power supply problems or electrical malfunctions the park brake shift lock can be unlocked manually. The procedure is described in the owners manual.
