"Transmission Fluid Condition, Check"

Note:   A check on the colour and smell of the automatic transmission fluid provides initial diagnostic data on the condition of the mechanical components of the automatic transmission.

Test conditions:

  • Vehicle horizontal
  • Handbrake on
  • Brake pedal actuated
  • Engine idling, warmed up

  Remove

1.   Move selector lever through all the positions and back again
•   Change gear from "P" to "1"
•   Change gear from "1" to "P"
2.   Switch off engine
3.   Drain off a small amount of transmission fluid
Note:   Place collecting pan underneath - transmission fluid will escape
•   AF17 / AF22: Unscrew oil drain bolt
•   AF40: Unscrew fluid checking bolt
•   Pour transmission fluid into a glass
4.   Check the colour and odour of the drained fluid
•   If the transmission fluid is red, not cloudy and contains no particles, continue fault diagnosis as specified by the test instructions
•   If the transmission fluid is brown/black, cloudy and smells burnt, we recommend dismantling the transmission to check the liner plates of the respective clutches (C) or brake (B)
Note:   Replace damaged components.
•   If there is a high percentage of metal particles in the transmission fluid then it is recommended that the transmission be replaced with one that has been overhauled.

  Install

5.   Tighten oil drain bolt / fluid checking bolt
•   AF17 / AF22: 40 Nm
•   AF 40: 8 Nm
