DTCs

Sensor Camshaft

•  Improper installation
•  Physical damage
•  Foreign material passing between the sensor camshaft and the reluctor wheel
•  Looseness
•  Gap between the sensor camshaft and the reluctor wheel is out of range

P0340 00, P0016 00

Reluctor Wheel

•  Improper installation
•  Physical damage
•  Foreign material passing between the sensor camshaft and the reluctor wheel
•  Looseness

P0340 00, P0016 00

Circuit/System Description

The camshaft position sensor correlates the crankshaft to camshaft position so that the engine control module (ECM) can determine which cylinder is ready to be fueled by an injector. As the camshaft rotates, the reluctor wheel interrupts a magnetic field produced by a magnet within the sensor and sends a signal to the ECM through the signal circuit.

Conditions for Running the DTC

P0016

•  DTC P0336 is not set.
•  The engine is running.
•  The engine speed is greater than 50 RPM.
•  The DTC run continuously once the above conditions are met.

P0340 and P0344

•  DTC P0016 is not set.
•  The engine is running.
•  The engine speed is greater than 50 RPM.
•  The DTCs run continuously once the above conditions are met.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

P0016 00

The ECM detects an incorrect camshaft position sensor signal.

P0340 00

The ECM detects no camshaft position sensor signal.

P0344 00

The ECM detects too few camshaft position sensor pulses.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

DTCs P0016, P0340, and P0344 are Type B DTCs.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

DTCs P0016, P0340, and P0344 are Type B DTCs.

Diagnostic Aids

The following conditions can also set the DTC:

•  Physical damage to the camshaft position sensor or the reluctor wheel
•  Gap between the camshaft position sensor and the reluctor wheel is out of range
•  Improper installation of the camshaft position sensor or the reluctor wheel
•  Foreign material passing between the camshaft position sensor and the reluctor wheel

Circuit/System Verification

1. Engine running, observe the DTC information with a scan tool. DTCs P0016, P0340, and P0344 should not set.
2. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data.

Circuit/System Testing

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the B23 Camshaft Position Sensor.
2. Test for less than 5 Ω of resistance between the low reference circuit terminal 1 and earth.
If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit test normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
3. Ignition ON, test for greater than 4.8 V between the 5 V reference circuit terminal 3 and ground.
If less than the specified range, test the 5 V reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit test normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
4. Ignition ON, test for 4.2-4.8 V between the signal circuit terminal 2 and ground.
If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
5. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the B23 Camshaft Position Sensor.
