Catalytic Converter Replacement (1.7L Diesel LPL, LPV, and LUB)

Removal Procedure

Warning: In order to avoid being burned, do not service the exhaust system while it is still hot. Service the system when it is cool.
Warning: Avoid contact with HOT components. Wear safety glasses and protective gloves to avoid personal injury.

Caution: Do not bend the exhaust flex pipe more than 10 degrees in any direction. Bending of more than 10 degrees or twisting in a range of ±0.5 degrees will damage the exhaust flex decoupler.

1. Open the hood.
2. Remove the oil level indicator tube. Refer to Oil Level Indicator Tube Replacement .
3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
4. Remove the charge air cooler inlet air hose. Refer to Charge Air Cooler Inlet Air Hose Replacement .
5. Remove the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement .
6. Remove the exhaust particulate filter. Refer to Exhaust Particulate Filter Replacement .
7. Remove the catalytic converter heat shield. Refer to Catalytic Converter Heat Shield Replacement .
8. Remove the exhaust temperature sensor-position 1. Refer to Exhaust Temperature Sensor Replacement - Position 1 .

9. Remove the 2 catalytic converter bracket bolts (2) from the catalytic converter bracket (1).

10. Remove the 3 catalytic converter bolts (1).
11. Remove the catalytic converter (2).

Installation Procedure

Note:  Install a NEW catalytic converter gasket.
1. Install the catalytic converter (2).
2. Loosely install the 3 New catalytic converter bolts (1).

3. Loosely install the 2 catalytic converter bracket bolts (2) to the catalytic converter bracket (1).

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution .
4. Tighten the catalytic converter bolts to 45 N·m (33 lb ft) .
5. Tighten the catalytic converter bracket bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft) .
6. Install the exhaust temperature sensor-position 1. Refer to Exhaust Temperature Sensor Replacement - Position 1 .
7. Install the catalytic converter heat shield. Refer to Catalytic Converter Heat Shield Replacement .
8. Install the exhaust particulate filter. Refer to Exhaust Particulate Filter Replacement .
9. Install the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement .
10. Install the charge air cooler inlet air hose. Refer to Charge Air Cooler Inlet Air Hose Replacement .
11. Lower the vehicle.
12. Install the oil level indicator tube. Refer to Oil Level Indicator Tube Replacement .
13. After the replacement of the catalytic converter, use a scan tool to perform the appropriate reset function. Refer to Engine Control Module Programming and Setup .
14. Close the hood.
