Power Steering Noise (ZF only)

This Bulletin Replaces TI-C-62, Group M-11, February 1993, which should be destroyed

 

 

Please Note:    Effective 1 August 1994, the standard time for replacing power steering pipes on non-16V models has now been revised from 2.5 hours to 0.7 hours. This operation can now be performed without removal of the steering rack assembly by using a snap-on 19 mm combination spanner, part number OEXM190 or a commercially available equivalent. The standard time for 16V models is not affected.

 

 

Subject:           Power Steering Noise (ZF only)

 

Vehicles:         Astra, Cavalier (Except 4 x 4), Calibra - up to 1992 MY (Except 4 x 4)

 

 

Further investigations regarding the intermittent power steering noise on ZF power steering gear assemblies have recently been completed. The nature of the complaint is an intermittent noise and loud screech coming from the area of the power steering rack assembly when the vehicle is manoeuvred near to full lock at low speed. Vibration may also be felt through the steering wheel.

 

In November 1992, a new reservoir and feed pipe were introduced on production and these should now be used to rework any vehicles with the ZF power steering rack exhibiting the problem.

Installation   Remove the power steering rack, pipes and reservoir from the vehicle.   Install the new reservoir and pipes to the rack and re-fit to vehicle     Ensure the clips, strap and pipe are in position as shown.   Top up system and bleed as required.
