Steering  

Straight Ahead Position, Check/Adjust  

Object Number: 616201  Size: DEFAULT  Important!   

After all the operation to be performed on the steering gear, steering column assembly and on the EPS steering column, the straight-ahead position of the steering must be checked.  

The straight-ahead position of the steering gear is achieved when dimension (1) is  

manual steering/EPS  

- 420 mm ± 2 mm  

hydraulic power steering  

- 435 mm ± 2 mm and  

toe-in, camber and toe-out have been correctly adjusted - see operation "Chassis Alignment" in group "E", or as of MY '99 in the relevant "Chassis, Suspension" brochure.  

 

Object Number: 616196  Size: DEFAULT  Inspect   

Attach Control Gauge KM-551-A between tie rod end and left steering casing fastening shoulder.  

In the straight-ahead position of the steering gear, the steering wheel must be in the centre position and the lower clamp bolt (arrow) of the intermediate spindle must be horizontal.

If the steering wheel deviates from the centre position (steering gear in straight-ahead position) by more than 5 ° - put steering wheel into centre position - see operation "Steering Wheel in Centre Position, Position (Vehicle without Airbag)" or "Steering Wheel in Centre Position, Position (Vehicles with Airbag)".
