Trailer Hitch, Service Install (Mechanical Equipment) - Models 73, 78, 79
Remove, Disconnect Remove license plate lamp. Remove rear trim panelling from rear panel:
3 bolts at upper rear end panel (1) |
4 bolts at lower rear end panel (2) |
2 plastic nuts at wheel cutout panel (3) |

Press off wheel well panelling from wheel well and remove rear trim panelling backwards. Remove rear trim panelling bracket from rear panel (see illus. II). Remove luggage compartment floor covering and spare wheel. Remove existing insulation material from contact surface of left and right retaining plate. Heat insulation material with hot air dryer and remove. Cut wheel well panelling in contact area. Drill two holes, Ø 12 mm/0.5 in., in floor panelling above left and right side member (see illus. III). Use existing punch marks. |

Install, Connect Drill four holes, Ø 12 mm/0.5 in., and one wiring harness hole, Ø 14 mm/ 0.55 in., in rear panel. Use existing punch marks. Deburr holes and protect against corrosion.
Clean Remove all metal shavings completely. |

Install, Connect Detach rear muffler from bracket. Remove any PVC or bitumen underseal from left and right side members. Install reinforcement. Install retaining plates through left and right side members and screw on loosely with nut and washer.
Important! Install long bolt and spacer sleeve at right front (looking towards front of vehicle). |

Install, Connect Seal mounting points on rear end panel with sealing compound. Bolt trailer hitch with M 10 washers, hex nuts and hex bolts to reinforcement piece and rear end panel.
Tighten (Torque) All hex nuts - 45 Nm / 33 lbf. ft. |

Install, Connect Attach rear muffler to bracket. Cut out rear trim panelling at marked position and attach. Stick on label "Permissible Tongue Load max. 50 kg/120 lb." to inside of tailgate. |
