ABS 5/TC, ABS 5.3/TC > < Replacing rear wheel sensor, models F 08, F 08 & W5L, F 68 (vehicles with disk brakes)

ABS-Control Unit, Remove and Install (ABS 5.3, ABS 5.3 / TC)

Important:   Before undertaking repair work to ABS hydraulic modulator or the control unit for the ABS hydraulic modulator, it is essential to read the repair instructions for ABS 5.3, ABS 5.3 / TC, ABS 8.0, ABS 8.0 / ESP.

  Remove

1.   Remove hydraulic modulator with ABS-control unit LUREF_1.gif
2.   Clamp hydraulic modulator in vice with pump motor side downwards
Note:   Use soft metal protective jaws.
3.   Unlatch wiring harness plug (1) for pump motor and remove from the ABS control unit
•   Press wiring harness plug carefully out of clamp mounting
4.   Remove fastening bolts (arrows). Remove ABS control unit from hydraulic modulator.
Note:   Fastening bolts may not be re-used!

  Install

5.   Check gasket (1) for perfect condition and cleanliness
Note:   Check gasket for cracks, rough surface, notches etc. If the sealing surfaces are damaged, the ABS control unit must be replaced.
6.   Clean sealing surface (2) on the control unit carefully with lint-free cloth
Note:   If there are heavy deposits or gasket residue: soak the cloth in spirits.
7.   Align the ABS-control unit (3) centrally and place carefully on the hydraulic modulator (4)
Note:   Do not tilt the ABS-control unit when placing it on the hydraulic modulator!

8.   Insert new fastening bolts
Note:   If the fastening bolts are difficult to turn while bolting on or it is not possible to attain the required tightening torque, the assembly is defective and must therefore be replaced completely.
•   Screw in fastening bolts (1) by hand until the bolt heads are in contact with the ABS-control unit
•   Then screw in the fastening bolts diagonally in several stages
Note:   Until the ABS control unit is in even contact with the pump housing and the fastening bolts are only tightened slightly.
•   Screw in fastening bolts (2) and tighten gently by hand
•   Tighten fastening bolts (1) diagonally using MKM-J-6459-B (3) - tightening torque 2.6 Nm
•   Tighten fastening bolts (2), tightening torque 2.6 Nm

9.   Connect wiring harness plug (1) for pump motor to ABS control unit
Note:   Engaging spring (2) must engage audibly. Press wiring harness into clamp mounting.

10.   Install hydraulic modulator with ABS-control unit LUREF_1.gif
11.   Brake System, Bleed
12.   Check function of brakes and ABS during test drive
