Repair Instructions for ABS 5.3, ABS 5.3/TC, ABS
8.0, ABS 8.0 ESP
Braking in the control range of ABS is indicated to the driver
via brake pedal pulsation in conjunction with noise from the return
pump, thereby warning the driver to adapt his driving speed to the
given road conditions.
If there is a defect in the ABS, the ABS telltale (1) in the
instrument assembly will be illuminated, the conventional brake
system, however, will continue to be fully operational. The vehicle
should then be checked and repaired by a franchised Opel/Vauxhall
Dealership or an authorised Opel/Vauxhall Service Dealership as
soon as possible.
Function check:
After all operations not affecting parts of the ABS, a simple
function check is sufficient. In other words, 3 sec after switching
on the ignition the ABS telltale in the instrument assembly must go
out. If the ABS telltale in the instrument assembly does not
extinguish or illuminates intermittently while driving, the system
is defective.

Notes on Repair Work on ABS 5.3, ABS 5.3/TC, ABS
8.0, ABS 8.0 ESP
It is important to comply with the ESD (electrostatic discharge)
requirements, if these are not observed components (integrated
circuits), especially the pressure sensors of ESP systems, can be
destroyed. An appropriate measure must be taken, such as a work
area appropriate to ESD. If this is not available employees can
also be protected against electrostatic discharges, e.g. by wearing
an anti-static armband which is attached to the vehicle body.
After carrying out work involving the ABS hydraulic modulator or
the ABS control unit (e.g. accident repairs), the entire ABS system
must be checked.
The test can be performed with "TECH 2" according to the valid
Checking Procedure. A self-check of the ABS is performed when
stationary with ignition switched on, this self-check may sometimes
be audible as a result of noises in the return pump.
The following must be observed when working on
vehicles with ABS:
- For electric welding operations, the plug must be disconnected
from the ABS control unit.
- The ABS control unit may be subjected to a temperature of no
more than 80°C for an unlimited period during painting
work.
- After working on the brake system, it must be bled.
- Check all connections for leaks.
- Ensure the correct seating of the battery connections after
completing repair work.
- Do not use a quick charger to start the engine.
- Ensure that all connections to the wiring harness are
secure.
- Never disconnect or insert multi-plug for wiring harness from
the ABS control unit with ignition switched on.
Repair Instructions for TC (Traction Control)
Traction Control is only available in conjunction with ABS
5.3/TC, ABS 8.0 ESP and the Z 18 XE engine.
The most important input value of the TC is the distance signal
of the ABS wheel sensor.
The distance is calculated from the number of wheel revolutions
and the tyre diameter. This means that differing tyre diameters,
e.g. as a result of worn tyres on the rear axle and new tyres on
the front axle, would provide false information about the
instantaneous speed of the vehicle. To avoid this undesirable
effect, an automatic adaptation to the tyre sizes is performed in
the ABS control unit. This adaptation requires a certain period of
time. In this time period, the TC may be engaged erroneously.
Tyre adjustment can be carried out by the
following methods:
- Ensure all tyres have the correct tyre pressures - see the
relevant Owner's Manual or the Service Plan
- Accelerate vehicle to a speed of 100 – 120 km/h / 62
– 74 mph
- Then allow vehicle to coast driving straight-ahead, without
operating accelerator or brake, until speed drops below 70
km/h.
Repeat this action 5 times; the system is then fully adapted to
the tyre sizes.
The engine output / engine torque is controlled automatically so
that optimum driving stability, traction and braking actions are
constantly assured within the physical limits. This control is
implemented by the respective engine control unit by means of
interventions in the engine management system.
Repair Instructions for TC (Traction Control)
(Continued)
The TC telltale (1) in the instrument assembly flashes when the
TC is engaged. A reduction in engine power during the course of
control can also be identified by the fact that the engine no
longer reacts as usual to the actuation of the accelerator.
The TC is automatically operative when the engine has been
started. The system conducts permanent self-monitoring during
travel.
If the TC telltale in the instrument assembly does not
extinguish several seconds after the ignition has been switched on,
or lights permanently during travel, a fault has occurred in the
TC. In this case, the function of the TC is discontinued.
