Flexible maintenance intervals - Corsa-C, Meriva, Tigra-B

As of model year 2004, engine oil condition monitoring (Oil-Life-Monitoring, OLM) will be used in the Corsa-C. The monitoring function will be performed by the engine control unit (ECM) and the instrument assembly.

Replace engine control unit (ECM) or instrument assembly

The engine control units supplied to the Service department are not programmed.

ECO Service-Flex:

up to 2 years/30,000 km petrol (up to max. 34,000 km)

up to 2 years/50,000 km Diesel

ECO Service exception:

1 year /30,000 km

Factory programming

ECO Service Flex is programmed in in the factory (service plan / checklist "O"). The Corsa-C has its own checklist, service plan "O".

ECO Service-Flex

The new Corsa-C has a flexible engine oil change interval that depends on the customer's driving profile. Under optimum driving conditions 2 years/34,000 km is achieved with a petrol engine or 2 years/50,000 km with a diesel engine.

An algorithm calculates the driver's driving habits from the following information:

  • Distance driven
  • Engine speed
  • Engine torque
  • Driving cycles
  • Coolant temperature
  • Oil temperature

and defines the driving distance until the next oil change is required.

The length of the service interval is not affected by topping up with engine oil of an approved grade.

Instrument display

Object Number: 2406688 Size: DEFAULT

The customer is notified of the next engine oil change by an indicator in the odometer.

The necessity for an engine oil change, subdivided into:

  • "Remaining distance between 500 and 1500 km" (1) and
  • Remaining distance less than 500 km" (2)

is automatically displayed in the instrument cluster odometer for several seconds whenever the ignition is switched on. In the range from 500 - 1500 km a fixed value of 1000 km is displayed, and in the range from 0 - 500 km a fixed value of 0 km is displayed.

Retrieving the remaining distance

Another display option is "Remaining distance to next service". The display is activated in the instrument cluster with the ignition switched off by pressing the "trip odometer" reset button. The remaining distance is displayed in the odometer in steps of 1000 km.

In the worst case, under difficult operating conditions, the request for the next service engine oil interval already appears after 15 months. If the vehicle battery is disconnected, all the engine oil service interval data is saved in the EEPROM and is available when the battery is re-connected. A driver with an average driving profile drives approx. 15,000 km per annum, an infrequent driver drives less than 5000 km per annum and a short-distance driver has frequent cold starts and is comparable with an infrequent driver. Infrequent drivers and short distance drivers receive the request for the engine oil service interval after no less than 15 months. Infrequent and short-distance drivers with a petrol engine reach 6800 km after 15 months with ECO Service Flex.

The Corsa-C is supplied with different engine oils, which are assigned to the following engines:

Engine oil grade GM-LL-A-025 and engine oil viscosity 0W-30, 0W-40, 5W-40

Z 10 XEP, Z 12 XE, Z 14 XEP, Z 16 SE, Z 16 YNG, Z 18 XE

Engine oil grade GM-LL-B-025 and engine oil viscosity 0W-30, 0W-40, 5W-40

Z 13 DT, Y 17 DT/DTL, Z 17 DTH

Top up engine oil

In exceptional cases the customer can use engine oil of grade ACEA-A3 or ACEA-A3/B3. In an ideal case the engine oil viscosity should be 0W-30 or 5-W-30 or greater than 30. However, 10W-30 can also be used.

If more than 1 litre of engine oil grade ACEA-A3 or ACEA-A3/B3 is added within an engine oil change interval of two years, the ECO Service Flex interval (service plan / checklist "O") can no longer be used. Service plan / checklist "G" should be used instead.

ECO Service

Due to individual driving profiles it may be necessary to program the first service to ECO Service (checklist "G"), e.g. for frequent drivers with petrol engines. A different engine oil grade may also be needed: ACEA-A3/B3. The instrument cluster and the control unit must then be programmed to ECO Service - this is also needed after an engine oil change if the customer still wishes to use ECO Service mode, since ECO Service Flex is automatically programmed when a reset takes place. At each inspection it is asked in service plan/checklist "O" and "G" whether the current service plan should be retained. In service plan/checklist "O" the Corsa-C has an interval of

2 years/

30,000 km for petrol engines (up to 34,000 km is possible) and

in service plan "G" the engine oil change interval is

1 year/

30,000 km for petrol engines.

Reprogramming takes place using the instrument cluster programming facility. The fact that reprogramming has taken place must be documented in the relevant confirmation boxes in the service booklet, and there is also a sticker/tag for the engine compartment pointing this out. This sticker/tag is also required if the control unit has been replaced. After an engine oil change has taken place the flexible service interval is reset by the Service employee.

Example of filling out the service sticker

The service sticker must be completed in case of ECM replacement, an additional engine oil change or an engine repair.

Example 1.

ECO Service, last service at mileage of 30,000 km on 01.05.2002.

ECM replacement at mileage of 45,000 km on 20.12.2002.

Sticker labelling, next service 60,000 km or 01.05.2003.

Example 2.

ECO Service Flex, last service at mileage of 30,000 km on 01.05.2002.

ECM replacement at mileage of 45,000 km on 20.12.2002.

Sticker labelling, next service 60,000 km or 01.05.2004.

The service interval indicator is not decisive during this period.

Following an ECM replacement the planned ECO Service or ECO Service Flex service interval does not start again until the service event documented on the sticker has occurred.

Resetting the flexible service interval (ECO Service Flex)

The flexible service interval display (time and mileage) can be reset via the instrument cluster assembly. The engine control unit is connected to the instrument cluster assembly.

Manual resetting

  • Ignition OFF. The speedometer display must be showing the trip odometer.
  • Press and hold down reset button (trip odometer knob).
  • Switch ignition ON and wait until the service interval display changes and keep the reset button pressed.
  • After several seconds the display on the speedometer shows the symbol with the maximum mileage of 34,000 for petrol engines.

The timer in the instrument cluster is set to 24 months. The engine control unit receives a signal via the CAN bus and the "oil level" is set to 100%. The engine control unit and the instrument cluster have now been reset.

Also point out to the customer that a service display that has been inadvertently reset cannot be updated again by the Opel dealer, particularly if no service booklet is available. A new engine oil change may be needed to avoid engine damage depending on the distance that has been travelled since the last engine oil change/inspection.

Resetting the service interval using TECH 2 (with simultaneous ECO Service reprogramming)

After an engine oil change the remaining distance display for vehicles with "ECO Service" must be reset using TECH 2.

The remaining distance display for vehicles with "ECO Service Flex" can also be reset with TECH 2. However, this should not be used for normal engine oil changes for cost reasons. In this case the reset should take place using the trip odometer knob.
