Flexible maintenance intervals

From model year 04, an engine oil condition monitoring system (Oil Life Monitoring, OLM) is available as an accessory for the Opel Corsa-C. The monitoring function is executed via the engine control unit (ECM) and the instrument assembly.

Replacement of engine control unit (ECM) and instrument assembly

The engine control units delivered to Service have not been programmed.

ECOService-Flex:

up to 2 years/30,000 km (up to max. 34,000 km) Petrol

up to 2 years/50,000 km Diesel

Exception: ECOService:

1 year/30,000 km

Factory programming

ECOService-Flex is programmed at the factory (Service Plan/Checklist "O"). Corsa-C has its own checklist, Service Plan "O".

ECOService-Flex

The new Corsa-C has a flexible engine oil change interval, based on the driving profile of the customer. Under optimum driving conditions, the interval can extend to 2 years/34,000 km (petrol engine) or 2 years/50,000 km (diesel engine).

An algorithm uses the information to calculate:

  • Distance travelled
  • Engine speed
  • Engine torque
  • Driving cycles
  • Coolant temperature
  • Oil temperature

The driving style of the driver, which is used to calculate the distance until the next oil change is necessary.

The length of the maintenance interval is not affected by topping up with engine oil of the permitted grade.

Instrument display

Object Number: 2406688 Size: DEFAULT

The customer is alerted when the next engine oil change is necessary by a display in the odometer.

The necessity of an engine oil change, classified as

  • "Remaining mileage between 500 - 1,500 km" (1) or
  • "Remaining mileage less than 500 km" (2)

is automatically displayed in the odometer in the instrument panel each time the ignition is switched on. When in the range 500 - 1,500 km, a fixed value of 1,000 km will be displayed, while when in the range 0 - 500, a fixed value of 0 km will be displayed.

Requesting remaining mileage

An additional display option is via "Remaining mileage until next Service". This is option is activated when the ignition is switched off by pressing the reset button of the "Trip odometer" in the instrument panel. The remaining mileage will be displayed in the odometer in 1,000 km increments.

In unfavourable conditions, i.e. extreme operating conditions, the reminder for the next engine oil service interval lights after just 15 months. If the vehicle battery is disconnected, all engine oil service interval data is stored in EEPROM and is available again when the battery is reconnected. Drivers with an average driving profile travel approx. 15,000 km per year while low-mileage drivers travel less than 5,000 km. Short-distance drivers, who have frequent cold starts, are classified as low-mileage drivers. Low-mileage and short-distance drivers receive the engine oil service interval reminder first after 15 months. After 15 months, low-mileage and short-distance drivers with ECOService-Flex and petrol engines have travelled approx. 6,800 km.

The Opel Corsa-C is available with different engine oils that are assigned to the engines listed below:

Engine oil grade GM-LL-A-025 and viscosity 0W-30, 0W-40, 5W-40

:

Z 10 XEP, Z 12 XE, Z 12 XEP, Z 14 XEP, Z 16 SE, Z 18 XE

Engine oil grade GM-LL-B-025 and viscosity 0W-30, 0W-40, 5W-40:

Z 13 DT, Y 17 DT/DTL, Z 17 DTH

Topping up engine oil

As an exception, the customer can use engine oil of grade ACEA-A3 or ACEA-A3/B3. Ideally, the viscosity of the engine oil used should then be 0W-30, 5-W-30 or higher than 30. Use of 10W-30, however, is still possible.

If the vehicle has been topped up with more than 1l engine oil of grade ACEA-A3 or ACEA-A3/B3 within one engine oil change interval of two years, the ECOService-Flex interval (Service Plan/Checklist "O") no longer applies. Service Plan/Checklist "G" is to be used instead.

ECOService

During the first Service, it may be necessary to program ECOService (Checklist "G") due to individual driving styles, e.g. high-mileage drivers with petrol engines. In conjunction with this, use of another engine oil grade is possible: ACEA-A3/B3. The instrument panel and control unit must then be programmed for ECOService - this is also necessary after an engine oil change if the customer wishes to continue in ECOService mode, since ECOService-Flex is programmed automatically upon reset. Upon each Service of Service Plan/Checklist "O" and "G" ask if the current Service Plan is to be retained. In Service Plan/Checklist "O", Corsa-C has the interval

2 years/

30,000 km for petrol engines (up to 34,000 km possible)

while in Service Plan "G", the engine oil change interval is

1 year/

30,000 km for petrol engines.

Reprogramming is performed via instrument assembly programming. When reprogramming has been performed, it must be recorded in the confirmation fields in the Service Booklet ("Engine control unit/instrument reprogrammed"). There is also a sticker/label for the engine compartment that indicates the change. This sticker/label is also required if the engine control unit has been replaced. After completing an engine oil change, the flexible service interval is reset by the service technician.

Examples for filling out service sticker

The service sticker is to be filled out in the event of ECM replacement, an additional engine oil change or repair to the engine.

Example 1.

ECOService, previous service at 30,000 km on 01.05.2002.

ECM replacement at 45,000 km on 20.12.2002.

Sticker marking: Next service 60,000 km or 01.05.2003.

Example 2.

ECOService-Flex, previous service at 30,000 km on 01.05.2002.

ECM replacement at 45,000 km on 20.12.2002.

Sticker marking: Next service 60,000 km or 01.05.2004.

The service interval display can be disregarded during this period.

Once the servicing documented on the sticker has been carried out after ECM replacement, the scheduled ECOService/ECOService-Flex service intervals commence again.

Resetting the flexible service interval (ECOService-Flex)

The display for the flexible service interval (time and mileage) can be reset via the instrument assembly. The engine control unit communicates with the instrument assembly.

Manual reset

  • Ignition OFF. The display in the speedometer must show the trip odometer reading.
  • Press and hold the reset button (trip odometer button).
  • Ignition ON, wait until the service interval display changes and keep the reset button depressed.
  • After a few seconds, the display in the speedometer shows the symbol with the maximum mileage (34,000 km for petrol engines).

The time counter in the instrument assembly is set to 24 months. The engine control unit receives a signal via the CAN bus and the "oil condition" is set to 100%. The engine control unit and the instrument assembly are thereby reset.

Inform the customer that a service display accidentally reset by the customer cannot be updated by the Opel dealer, especially if the Service Booklet is not available. Depending on the distance travelled since the last engine oil change/Main Service, a new oil change may be necessary in order to prevent damage to the engine.

Resetting service interval using TECH 2 (simultaneous ECOService reprogramming)

After an engine oil change, the remaining mileage display on vehicles with "ECOService" must be reset using TECH 2.

It is also possible to reset the remaining mileage display on vehicles with "ECOService-Flex" using TECH 2. This should not, however, be done during a routine engine oil change for reasons of cost. The trip odometer button should be used for resetting for routine oil changes.
