Straight-ahead Position, Check/Adjust
Note: After removal
and installation of the front axle body, assembly of the steering
wheel, steering column, EPS steering column or steering
intermediate shaft, it is essential to check the straight ahead
position of the steering. The straight ahead position is reached
when the boots are seated without tension over length (I) between
the grooves of the tie rod and the steering housing. The wheels and
the steering wheel must be in straight ahead position.
|
|
The steering intermediate shaft can be installed with an offset
of 180° or 360° to the steering pinion and an offset of
360° to the steering shaft. This can be seen when the boots are
clearly stretched or compressed in the straight ahead position of
the steering wheel and the wheels are not in straight ahead
position.
The steering wheel can be installed with an offset to the teeth
of the steering shaft. This can be seen when the marking on the
steering shaft does not conform with the marking on the steering
wheel hub. The markings on the steering shaft and steering wheel
hub are only visible when the steering wheel fastening bolts is
removed – see operation "Steering Wheel, Remove and
Install".
In the straight-ahead position of the front wheels, the mark on
the steering shaft must be vertical, the mark on the steering wheel
hub points downwards (arrow).

|
Remove
1. |
Turn steering wheel to straight-ahead position
|
2. |
Detach steering intermediate shaft from steering pinion
Note: Turn steering
pinion until the boots on both side sit evenly and without tension
and the wheels are in the straight-ahead position.
|
Install
Important: If the steering shaft
is found to be twisted in respect of the steering pinion, after
attaching the steering intermediate shaft to the steering pinion,
the airbag contact unit must be brought to the central position. This is
not necessary if it is ensured that the airbag contact unit is
already in the central position when the steering wheel is in the
straight-ahead position.
|
3. |
Attach steering intermediate shaft to steering pinion
Note: Slight deviations
from the straight-ahead position of the steering wheel and
straight-ahead position of the wheels can be corrected by adjusting
the toe-in, see brochure "Chassis Adjustment Values" for the model
year concerned.
