New special tool numbering system

In conjunction with GM, a new global numbering system for special tools has been adopted. A common special tools numbering system across all brands will enable multi-brand dealers to reduce the number of special tools required. It will also make it easier to locate and store the tools. With the introduction of the F40 transmission and the new Z13 DT diesel engine, all newly developed special tools are switched to the new numbering system. The tools can be used on Opel/Vauxhall, Saab, Chevrolet and Cadillac vehicles which have the same assemblies and modules.

Already existing and available Opel/Vauxhall special tools with KM numbers will remain. Any additions or new versions of these existing tools will continue to be numbered in line with the existing KM numbering principle.

Global special tool numbers in detail

The global special tool numbers are broken down as follows:

EN-12345

EN = Assembly category (in this case, EN stands for engine)

12345 = Main tool number or tool set number

EN-12345-A

A = modified tool (-A, -B, ...), this tool has replaced the original tool

EN-12345-100

100 = Individual tool from a tool set

EN-12345-101

101 = Part of an individual tool in a tool set

EN-12345-100-A

100-A = Modified tool from a tool set

EN-12345-101-A

101-A = Modified part of a tool in a tool set

To get a better overview of the special tools, these are sub-divided into six different groups.

GE = General

Tools for general operations, used on several assemblies. Tools for maintenance/inspection. Tools for air conditioning and heating systems

EN-XXXXX

EN = Engine

All tools for engine repair

The tools with global special tool numbers can be sorted in two different ways.

1. Sorted in ascending numerical order
    XX-46000
    XX-46001
    XX-46002
    XX-.........
    XX-.........
2. Sorted by group and in ascending numerical order

The numbers are only issued once, ie, there will not be a number GE-46000 and CH-46000, only a GE-46000 and a CH-46001.The new global special tool numbers will probably start with XX-46000.
