Steering Column, Replace
Remove
Remove steering spindle (see operation "Steering
Spindle, Upper, Replace").
Disconnect wiring harness for steering and ignition lock
from contact part.

As of MY '91
Remove ventilation hose.
Unscrew bolt (1), pull out hose from guide downwards and lay it
aside.

On all models
Unscrew hex nut for steering column support on bulkhead.

|
Unscrew shear plates under instrument panel.
To do this, centre punch the shear bolt (left side).
Drill hole into shear bolt, using commercially available bolt
extractor No. 1411 and 1/8" bit.
Drive bolt extractor into drilled hole and turn out shear bolt.
Clamp steering column in vice.

Remove housing for steering and ignition lock.
To do this, loosen shear bolt with a pointed chisel and un
screw it.
Replace steering column.
No provision is made for replacement of the plastic bearing in
lower part of steering column.

Install
Fasten down housing for steering and ignition lock with shear
bolt (hex head shears off).
Loosely premount steering column shear plates on
instrument panel and steering column support on bulkhead.
Insert wiring harness for steering and ignition lock into
contact part.
Install steering spindle, switch housing, signal switch and
wiper switch, as well as signal switch cover, lock cylinder and steering wheel
in steering column (see operation "Steering Spindle, Upper,
Replace").
Tighten clamp bolt for steering spindle flange - 22 Nm/16
lbf. ft.
Unscrew clamp bolt for steering pinion flange (assembly free of
play).
Attach steering column assembly without tension.
Tighten down shear plates. On the left side use a shear bolt (hex
head shears off).
on the right side use new self locking hex nut - 22 Nm/16
lbf. ft.
Tighten down steering column with support on bulkhead -
22 Nm/16 ft. lbf
Reinstall ventilation hose and secure with bolt (as of
MY '91).
Pull steering spindle upward to stop on steering spindle ball
bearing. In this position tighten clamp bolt for steering pinion flange -
25 Nm/18 lbf. ft.
Check straight ahead driving position of steering (see
operation "Steering, Position Straight Ahead").
