Rear Differential, Remove and Install > < Fluid Level, Check and Correct

Differential Cover, Seal or Replace

  Remove

Remove exhaust system starting at catalytic converter LUREF_1.gif

Support rear differential with hydraulic jack and KM-485 (1). Remove both wheel speed sensors at wiring harness plugs (2). Detach heat shields from vehicle underbody. Unbolt centre bearing from vehicle underbody (2 bolts). Unbolt front and rear damping bushings for rear differential from rear axle body and lower rear differential.

Unscrew retaining screws for differential cover from differential, remove cover – place drip tray under differential.

  Clean

Clean sealing surfaces of transmission housing and transmission cover.

  Install

When replacing differential cover: Transfer wheel sensors – tightening torque 8 Nm / 6 lbf. ft.

Object Number: 2389179  Size: DEFAULT

Evenly coat sealing surfaces with sealing compound. Screw cover onto housing, when doing this always use new Tensilock screws – tighten retaining screws crosswise – tightening torque 60 Nm / 44.5 lbf. ft.

Attach front of differential housing (1 retaining screw) to rear section of housing – tightening torque 100 Nm / 74 lbf. ft. + 75° + 15°.

Attach rear of differential housing (2 retaining screws) to rear section of housing – tightening torque 90 Nm / 66.5 lbf. ft. + 30° + 15°.

Attach centre bearing bracket to vehicle underbody – tightening torque 20 Nm / 15 lbf. ft.

Attach heat shields to vehicle underbody. Connect wiring harness plug for both wheel sensors and clip onto vehicle underbody.

Install exhaust system from catalytic converter onwards LUREF_1.gif

Top up oil level – see operation for "Check and Correct Oil Level ".
