Automatic System Test (Quick Check)
The introduction of this test was made necessary by the linking of the systems, which can lead to the "transfer" of trouble codes; see also section 2.1, Domino Effect.
That means that
- an electrical defect in the sensors, actuators or wiring harness - an incorrect control unit - or an incorrect version code
does not lead to storage of a trouble code in the relevant control unit; the partially incorrect transfer of signals (incorrect voltage level) means that the trouble codes are stored in the other interlinked control units.
The new automatic system test can therefore indicate the following:
- A check of the installed control units can indicate whether the trouble code has been caused by an incorrect or incorrectly programmed control unit. - The display of trouble codes stored throughout the system network may allow a conclusion to be drawn about the actual cause of the fault.
The Automatic System Test (Quick Check) has been added to the TECH 1 main menu as the fifth option after the engine, drive train, chassis and body systems.
After this test has been selected, the engine, transmission and ABS control units are called up by TECH 1 and their identification data checked.
This check automatically verifies that the correct control units have been installed and that the control units are programmed for the correct versions.
If an incorrect control unit or incorrect version code is discovered, this is signalled by TECH 1 and the test is completed.
If the control unit and its version code are correct, any trouble codes stored in the control unit are displayed at the end of the test. If no trouble codes are stored, the system test is continued: without interruption.
If trouble codes have been recognized, they are listed at the end of the automatic system test along with the system to which they belong. This combination can be compared with the tables on pages 16, 17 and 18.
