Knock Control

The engine control unit's cylinder - selective knock control receives an engine knock signal from a knock sensor attached to the engine block.

1     Knock sensor

Object Number: 2387409 Size: DEFAULT

Function:

The engine knock signal determined by the knock sensor is sent to the engine control unit and evaluated. An evaluation logic unit in the control unit selectively allocates the knock events to the relevant cylinder.

The Motronic M 1.5.4 retards the firing angle for the next ignition of the affected cylinder in 3 - degree stages and maintains this retardation until knocking combustion is no longer recognized in that cylinder pair.

The Motronic M 1.5.4 now advances the firing angle in 0.75 - degree stages until knocking combustion is detected again.

The Motronic M 1.5.4 uses the engine speed and load to determine the conditions under which knocking combustion occurred and stores the firing angle correction value for the affected cylinder in the knock control's adaptation memory.

·     Service

If the knock sensor, the lead between the knock sensor and the control unit or the control unit itself is defective, the engine telltale illuminates and a trouble code is stored in the control unit:

-      Trouble code 16: knock signal measurement circuit 1 defective.

-      Trouble code 18: replace control unit knock signal module.

In case of a fault, the control unit continues operating with a replacement value to ensure that the vehicle can reach the nearest authorised Opel / Vauxhall workshop.
