Information about Condition of Automatic Transmission Fluid
A check of the condition (colour and odour) of the transmission fluid can supply initial diagnosis information about the transmission. This information must be used for the elimination of conditions which, if not recognised early enough, would lead to extensive transmission repairs. If possible, this check should not be performed after a test drive, as there would then be a risk of burning. The automatic transmission fluid can always be checked by opening the check bolt on the transmission fluid pan. When closing the check aperture with the check bolt, always use a new seal.
To top up or change the transmission fluid, use only "DEXRON ® III...". For further information, consult the brochures "Opel/Vauxhall Inspection System" or the "Service Instructions Omega-B, group K".
Note:
Overfilling the automatic transmission leads to foaming, loss of fluid or fluid escaping from the vent hose. This can lead to shifting problems and possibly damage the transmission.
IMPORTANT:
New automatic transmission fluid is red to distinguish it as automatic transmission fluid from engine oil and anti-freeze. The red colour is not an indication of quality and does not remain permanently; in operation the colour changes to light brown.
Dark brown transmission fluid with a burned odour can indicate excessive contamination. The cause of this may however be severe defects in the transmission (e.g. burned clutch linings).
Note:
The instruction "see Service Instructions" in this table refers to the "Service Instructions Omega-B, group K".
