Pressure or Return Line for Steering Gear, Replace (Vehicles with Right- hand Drive) > < Illustration, Power Assisted Steering Hydraulic Lines (Vehicles with RHD) Right-hand Steering)

Pressure or Return Lines – Steering Gear, Replace (Vehicles with LHD except Y 25 DT)

  Remove

Remove ground cable from battery. Disconnect pressure line on steering box (1) and from power assisted steering pump (2). On vehicles with diesel engines, additionally loosen alternator and pull to the front – see operation "Alternator, Remove and Install" in group "J".

Caution

Fluid escapes, collect and close off openings.

  Remove

Remove return line (1) from steering gear.

Raise vehicle. Remove hydraulic modulator heat shield. Remove return line (1) from coolant loop and remove return line.

Fluid escapes, collect and close off openings.

  Install

Connect return line (1) and tighten hose clamp. Screw on hydraulic unit heat shield – tightening torque 8 Nm / 6 lbf. ft.

Lower vehicle. Connect pressure line with new O-ring (1) to power assisted steering pump – tightening torque 28 Nm / 21 lbf. ft.

On vehicles with diesel engines: Connect pressure and return line to power assisted steering pump – tightening torque 37.5 Nm / 27.5 lbf. ft. Install alternator – see operation "Alternator, Remove and Install" in group "J"..

Connect pressure line (1) and return line (2) to steering gear – tightening torque 28 Nm / 21 lbf. ft.

  Inspect

Charge and bleed hydraulic system – see operation "Hydraulic System, Charge and Bleed".
