The speed signal is fed to the Servotronic control unit.

Using the actual speed signal and the characteristic curve programmed in the microprocessor, the control unit determines the electric current variable for the electro - hydraulic converter.

This converter (solenoid valve) is attached directly to the steering gear valve housing. It converts the electrical signal into the corresponding hydraulic control variable, which determines the reaction pressure and thus the steering force.

The result of this is that the vehicle is easy to steer at a standstill and when parking.

As speed increases, the actuating force required for the steering wheel increases. Due to this higher actuating force, the sensation of road contact is left intact.

This diagram shows the steering force progression in relation to the vehicle speed.

F            Steering force in (N) depending on

              road surface

V            Vehicle speed in (km / h)

- - -         Characteristic curve of standard power steering

___        Characteristic curve of Servotronic

1            Parking

2            Medium speed range

3            High speed range
