Function of Switched Intake System, X 18 XE and X 20 XEV  

A shaft positioned centrally in the intake tract is fitted with 4 individual switchover valves - one for each cylinder. The switchover valves are actuated by an engine speed and load-dependent characteristic curve. Above engine speeds of approx. 3600 rpm, the switchover valves are generally open. The result is regular and higher torque progression, especially in the low engine speed range.
