Important Instructions for Operations on Automatic Transmission

Before dismantling of transmission carry out oil pressure test according to test instructions (4-gear Automatic AF 13/17/20/22). The diagnosis established enables a direct repair.

If heating is required for removal or installation of components, the temperature must be determined using thermo-colour pencils or suitable gauge.

Transmission, Dismantle:

Whenever working on the manual transmission ensure utmost cleanliness of components and tools. Transmission malfunctioning is frequently caused by dirt and foreign objects.

To clean transmission parts, use equipment corresponding to the "Opel/Vauxhall Workshop Equipment" catalogue.

Clean removed parts after disassembling and check for wear and damage. If defective seal rings are found when disassembling, inspect grooves and seating surfaces for foreign bodies, burrs and damage.

If metal shavings are found while draining fluid, completely disassemble and clean transmission. If foreign objects are found while rinsing the converter, replace the converter.

If there is a defect such that suspended parts can get into the fluid (bearing or gear run in, clutch burned), then the valve body must be disassembled for rinsing. Proceed with the utmost caution, as the inner parts of the valve body are not available as single parts. In particular, do not damage the piston seal rings and springs and do not lose the cotters. The electro-hydraulic pressure regulator is not available as a single part and if defective must be replaced together with the valve body (complete).

Transmission, Dismantle (Continued):

When disassembling the valve body, lay aside piston, springs and valves in installation order to prevent them from being interchanged, note position of balls. Thoroughly flush the valve body - in particular the bores and ducts - and then blow dry. Replace valve body (completely) if swarf, scoring or other damage to operational surfaces is revealed as a result.

When placing attaching parts in vice, always use soft protective jaws.

If incorrect values are found when starting torques are measured, dismantle the relevant attaching part and overhaul mount.

The retaining pins of Transmission Holder KM-910 (AF 13/17) and KM-694 (AF 20/22) are designed to be rotatable and can be locked after every quarter-turn so that a favourable installation position can be attained. Exception: When releasing housing bolts and separating housing parts, always keep transmission fixed horizontally (auxiliary housing points upwards), as assemblies are free and could fall out.

Transmission, Assemble:

Always renew gaskets and securing elements, do not overstretch retaining rings.

When installing, coat the components (gears, shafts, etc.) and bolts with transmission fluid. Insert bearings and gaskets with assembly grease, cement to the affected installation sites if necessary.

Transmission, Assemble:

Blow-dry all components - in particular the ducts - after using cleansing agents. Functional tests are conducted in part with low pressure compressed air (4 bar) - use pressure reduction valve and appropriately adjust.

Lay new clutch plates and brake bands at least 2 hours in transmission fluid before installing.

The position and installation position of the thrust bearing and thrust washers is shown in the illustrations at the beginning of the section "Assemblies, Install in Transmission".

Install housing parts with sealing compound.

Notice:

The shift points previously published in the Service Instructions under "Technical Data" are integrated in the relevant Checking Procedures.
