Steering Wheel  

Steering Wheel, Remove and Install (Vehicles with Airbag up to MY '98)  

  Important!   

Prior to assembly operations involving the airbag observe, without fail, the "Safety Regulations for Restraint Systems".   Turn steering wheel in straight-ahead position, remove ignition key and allow steering lock to engage.     Remove, Disconnect    Disconnect ground cable from battery. Wait 1 minute, capacitor is discharging.   Remove airbag unit - see operation "Airbag Unit, Driver's Side, Remove and Install" in group "C".   If present: disconnect wiring harness plug for radio remote control.   Bend up locking plate (2). Remove fastening nut (1) from steering wheel. Mark steering wheel installation position relative to steering shaft. Remove steering wheel from steering shaft with Remover KM-210-B (3).

Notice: 

 
When replacing steering wheel: As of approx. March 1996, only modified steering wheels with guide journals for airbag units are available. When replacing steering wheel and re-using old airbag unit, saw off guide journals (arrows).  

  Install, Connect   

Guide wiring harness for contact unit and - if present - for radio remote control through opening in steering wheel hub. Position steering wheel on steering column to align with mark - ensure that contact unit adapter is inserted in steering wheel hub.

Install new locking plate (2). Attach fastening nut (1) to steering shaft - tightening torque 20 Nm / 15 lbf. ft. Secure fastening nut with locking plate.   If present: connect radio remote control wiring harness plug.   Install airbag unit - see operation "Airbag Unit, Driver's Side, Remove and Install" in group "C".   Connect ground cable to battery.
