Step C - Preparatory Operations

General

The purpose of the described wiring harness repair methods is to supercede as far as possible the renewal of wiring harnesses, which was necessary to date, with more cost-efficient repairs.

This means that, after localisation of the fault and classification into the above mentioned damage scenarios, an evaluation must be made as to which type of fault remedy is more economical: repair or replacement of the wiring harness.

As a rule, the work expenditure for repairs must not be higher than the existing time allowance for replacement of the wiring harness. In border cases, any additional time required can be approved by quoting the "Y" self-approval code.

As a guide, section 6 "Time Allowance" contains the determine time allowances solely for repairs to wiring harnesses, without the addition of any additional work that may be necessary, which must be added separately to the estimate.

C1 - Preparatory checks

•  Localise defect in the wiring harness and/or wiring harness plug, for example using the circuit diagram information or Checking Procedures.

•  Check that the battery voltage is higher than 11.5 V and that there is a good ground connection.

•  Check whether the defective cable, wiring harness or wiring harness plug is approved for repairs (see section 2 "Applications" and 5 "Parts and Reference Lists").

•  Determine damage scenario, see section 2.1 "Repairable Damage Scenarios".

•  Estimate the time allowance for the repair using section 6 "Time Allowance" plus the time allowances for any preparatory work such as removal of panels or components, and compare this with the time allowance for replacement of the complete wiring harness.

•  Select the more economical method of fault elimination.

C2 - Prepare vehicle

•  Ignition OFF, disconnect cable from battery negative terminal and mask terminal.

Vauxhall vehicles only:

Disarm the power sounder before disconnecting the vehicle battery; disconnect the vehicle battery within 15 seconds of switching off the ignition.

C3 - Prepare repair area

•  Remove panelling and/or attaching parts.

•  Detach wiring harness as far as necessary to allow work to be performed correctly.

•  Remove wiring harness insulation generously.
